United Church in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands

The United Church in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands was established in 1968 by the coming together of the Methodists, the United Church of Port Moresby, and Papua Ekalesia, which had been established in 1962 by the London Missionary Society and the Kwato Extension Association. The United Church was the first of the larger churches to have a body of clergy and lay workers made up largely of Melanesians. The church is a member of the PNG Council of Churches and the third largest Christian denomination in PNG. In 1990 the 456,994 members of the United Church were 13.1 percent of the Christian population and 12.7 percent of the total population.
