Statutory Authorities in Papua New Guinea

Some of the 50 statutory authorities established by the government since 1975 have been self-supporting, some partly paid for through special levies or charges for services and others entirely funded by the government. Commercial authorities include the Electricity Commission (ELCOM) and the Post and Telecommunication Corporation; partly funded authorities include some cash crop corporations and the National Research Institute; and fully funded authorities include the National Council of Women and the National Standards Council. Before 1975 some of these bodies such as ELCOM (established 1963) were known as public corporations.
