Sports in Papua New Guinea

European team sports and athletics, encouraged by the schools, became popular after World War II and interest grew steadily after Independence. Rugby League is the leading participatory and spectator sport. The PNG team, the Kumuls, competes in the World Cup competition. Basketball, netball, volleyball and soccer are important amongst the 30 sports represented in the PNG Sports Federation. PNG gained second place at the 1987 South Pacific Games and first place at the 1991 Games which it hosted.
