Sepik River

The 1,100-kilometer-long Sepik is only 100 kilometers shorter than the Fly, PNG’s largest river. The Sepik has a catchment area of 78,000 square kilometers and drains parts of Sandaun, East Sepik, Enga and Madang Provinces. Its flood plain is over 70 kilometers at its widest and has an estimated 1,500 lakes. The river is navigable for approximately 700 kilometers and canoes and small boats provide the main form of transport for people in river villages.
