New Deal

Australians were grateful to the PNGans who helped them defeat the Japanese in World War II. After the war the Australian Labor Government embarked upon an ambitious program of reforms to provide PNG with a “New Deal”. The “New Deal” included significantly increased funding for education, health, welfare, assistance in agricultural projects and the abolition of the indentured labor system.
