Leslie Johnson

Leslie William Johnson (1916- ),¬†Australian administrator. Johnson was educated at Perth Modern School, Claremont Teachers’ College and the University of Western Australia where he gained an M.A. During World War II he served with the AIF. He lectured at the Western Australia Teachers’ College in 1958 and was a Superintendent in the Western Australia Education Department from 1959-60. Johnson was Director of Education in PNG from 1962-66, Acting Administrator from 1966-70 and Administrator from 1970 until self-government in 1973. In 1974 he was Australia’s first High Commissioner to PNG and on his return to Australia became Director General of the Australian Development Assistance Agency. His publications include Colonial Sunset: Australia and Papua New Guinea 1970-1974.
