Fly River

The country’s longest river (1,200 kilometers) empties into the Gulf of Papua in Western Province. Since 1984 it has been badly polluted by runoff from Ok Tedi mining operations. It is navigable to Kiunga some 800 kilometers from the mouth. Kiunga, which is only 20 meters above sea level, is the port for copper and gold exports from the Ok Tedi mining project.
