Elite in Papua New Guinea

The group of educated PNGans who run the country. The elite includes the public servants, parliamentarians, managerial, entrepreneurial and professional men (there are few women) who make the economic, social and political decisions which influence the development of the country. The elite emerged in the late 1960s when the Australian government rapidly expanded the secondary and higher education systems to prepare PNGans to take over the management of the nation at Independence. In PNG usage, individual members of the elite are referred to as elites or the elites.
